Making Waves

Over the past three years Creative Partnerships London North has worked with over 70 schools in the north London boroughs of Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest. Our aim has been to raise the aspirations and achievements of children and young people by developing a participant led, high quality, creative learning change programme in collaboration with a range of strategic partners. As a result of a 3-year programme of work we wanted to use what we have learnt and shape a pilot project for primary schools and artists new to Creative Partnerships - this resulted in Making Waves. Through the project we investigated if we could pass on ways of working that are both supportive and flexible enough for each school to develop their own creativity as well as impact on an area of school improvement.

So, what kinds of things did we learn? Well, the importance of including children from the outset in sharing and steering the project. Another would be the value of asking questions as a way of involving people from across the school community in a non-threatening way in order to address an area of change, and having ‘half-baked’ ideas and inviting others to make them whole. This project supported the participating schools to generating lots and lots of ideas and together refining them into an area of enquiry owned by the whole school community.
