Boots teams up with Abraham Darby Academy
Twenty five pupils swapped the classroom for the high street last week as part of an innovative cross-curricular partnership.
The students from Abraham Darby Academy in Telford visited Boots Opticians, where they had the opportunity to interview a trainee dispensing optician and an optometrist, finding out more about the skills and qualifications required in these roles.
The idea was developed following discussions about self image and wearing glasses. The pupils wrote letters of application to take part in an experiment to develop a new look for the new year and work has gathered momentum to embrace science, fashion, enterprise and careers.
Ann O'Brien, Assistant Principal at the Academy, said of the project:
"The project has really captured our students' curiosity. We never anticipated that a conversation with a teaching assistant about Sarah Palin and Harry Potter could generate so much scope for creative teaching and learning. The employees at Boots have been brilliant, and the pupils really enjoyed their research visit."
Linda Bishop, Practice Manager, Boots Opticians, added:
"We are delighted to have been involved in this project and extremely pleased that the pupils were able to gain a valuable insight into work experience within our Company. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and look forward to working with the school moving forward."
The children also commented:
"I enjoyed going shopping and the eyes tests and choosing glasses at Boots. It's been a fantastic project." Kelsey Yr 7.
"I learned loads about eyes and glasses on the trip to Boots and liked trying the make up. I can't wait for the photo shoot." Amy Yr 8.
All pupils were shown the latest equipment used to test eyesight and detect health issues. They were then fitted with designer frames from the Boots range and were given a makeover using Boots No7 products. A professional studio photo shoot is now planned with a promotional campaign and exhibition in school.
