Pupils in Kingstanding transforming lessons into food
Year five students at Christ the King School in Kingstanding, are making a meal out of statistics. The school, which has Creative Partnerships, Change School status, worked with internationally acclaimed theatre company, Stan’s Cafe to create an exhibition entitled ‘Smartie Mission’. The exhibition is based on the pupils own research into statistics - using everyday food items. They also organised an exhibition which was open to parents and the local community.
The main objective was to improve the mathematical and literacy skills of the children. They are also learning the vital skills of planning and being organised to meet deadlines (writing a media release was one of their first jobs).
Stan’s Cafe used their world famous 'Of All the People in the World' show to inspire the children at Christ the King. That show used piles of rice to show human populations. At the Christ the King exhibition the children have used all sorts of food. This includes carefully measured spaghetti to represent journeys to school and foreign countries and bread sticks to show the heights of the world’s tallest buildings.
Adam Hardy, Head Teacher of Christ the King said: ‘The children really enjoy the work and they are learning a lot of maths. What more could I ask for!’
A year 5 pupil said: ‘I like the fact we are learning and having fun at the same time. It is really exciting being involved in this project, we want all our hard work to be worth it, so want everyone to come and visit our exhibition.’
