Magnetic and Electrical Stories

Centre for Urban Education

Enquiry Question: In what ways can exploring magnets and electricity through film making improve speaking and listening in Year 3 and 4?

This discrete project in St Johns Primary School, Bollington, Cheshire East was undertaken by 16 children from Class 2 (Year 3 & 4)

After researching the topic for ways in which to explore magnets and electricity through film making, the children decided what they wanted to include in their film and then with the help of two Creative Pracitioners, worked together to develop and produce their animation.

Impact

  • The children rose to the challenge and took ownership of the project;
  • Many children found a voice as they were put in new settings and given responsibility;
  • New skills were acquired including learning how to produce storyboards and filmmaking, and children had an opportunity that they appreciated;
  • Children improved their speaking and listening and did so while becoming a closer peer group;
  • Some children were trusted with expensive equipment which boosted self esteem;
  • Children thought about the endless creative possibilities and how they can develop their skills.
